Why Learning Chart Analysis is Important

Knowing how to read charts is crucial to those looking to profit from trading.  This can include the stock market, foreign exchange, Futures, or options.  Sometimes it can be a bit difficult to understand these charts at first, but if you figure out how to read these charts, you’re going to be on better footing than others who rely simply on news, and other information.

Stock market charts provide technical information regarding the performance of a company, while forex charting software tracks the comparison of one currency pair against another.  In both cases, this technical information can be analyzed in multiple time-frames in order to get an idea of how the security has acted in the past, and how it might perform in the future.  The longer you’re planning on remaining invested in your particular market, the larger the time-frame you’re going to use to analyze your chosen market.

The most important piece of information that can be gained from the reading of these charts is support and resistance levels.  These levels will make up the peaks and troughs in a chart, and show places where the market and the people trading it have decided that the price is either too high or too low, and therefor must go in another direction.  These price levels are what make up trends, whether the price is increasing, decreasing, or remaining flat.  These historical prices will tend to repeat themselves if the price approaches them again.  They make great places to enter trades because they provide built-in exit and entry points which tend to have a controlled amount of risk associated with them.

You can add various indicators to the mix once you’ve learned the basics.  These indicators will include moving averages, volume, volume weighted average price (VWAP).  When incorporated into a proper strategy, these indicators will help you decide when to buy and sell.  In the end though, the basics of chart reading never really change, and those indicators merely interpret the information that can be gained by learning basic technical analysis.

Learning the basics about how to read stock charts will increase you’re likelihood of success  This goes for Forex, and Futures charts as well.  Chart reading is an important skill, whether you prefer technical analysis, or fundamental analysis, because it allows you to gain a visual interpretation of the data that solidifies the picture whether you’re interpreting trends, or studying balance sheets.
